Max Roach: “Abbey Lincoln”

15 Jan

Max Roach originally planned to release We Insist!-Freedom Now in 1963, to mark the anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation. But as the civil rights movement accelerated in 1960 with the sit-ins in Greensboro, Roach recorded and released the album that year. RIP Abbey Lincoln, who died last August. On Dr. King’s birthday: “until justice runs down like water, and righteousness like a mighty stream.”
